Ugh, the formatting on that post didn't come through at all. Let me try again. I can also confirm that this is their official statement at the moment. It would seem that the dev's still believe that they are on the right path, but at least the reply I got from Jess indicates that all of our feedback IS being funneled to the dev's, it apparently just isn't coming through loud enough to change their minds. Anyway, this is the correspondence I have had with Jess: Support, Jan 17 19:03 (EST): Mark, Thank you for your reply. Please do not feel like you have to apologize, you love your SongPop and you want to voice your feelings and know they are being heard. Part of my job is making sure these feelings get relayed to the developers, I do my best! I have asked for an official statement, and I have sent in every forum related to the Random and Best Match Features. For now the only statement I have from SongPop regarding the Best Match feature is this: "We are aware that some people are unhappy about the changes, but we are planning on keeping it that way. Metrics showed that people were playing more with Best Matches than with random people. Best Matches provide more quality matches than with Random." I really can't say if this will remain a feature or if the feedback will change that. All I can tell you is that we really do think its great that there is such a strong community of people who love and enjoy the app so much, they are willing to make their opinions heard. I wish I had more information to tell everyone, but at this point all I have is what is aforementioned here. Thanks Again. First of all please accept my apologies on my gender assumption. Honestly you do a great job in responding promptly to these tickets and it is good to know that you are an intermediary. I know being the messenger can be a tough gig. I think that what people are trying to get across is the frustration that they feel like their feedback is being ignored and that the developers are being prideful or driven by a revenue generating idea that has not turned out to be something that has enhanced the player experience even if the developers thought it would be an improvement. A simple statement acknowledging the concern would go a long way and would be good PR to show that it is a company that listens to their customers. Even something simple like saying "we have reviewed customer feedback and some valid points have been raised and we are discussing how to address them" would at least be a sign that people are being heard. Simply saying (whether your words or theirs) that what they did is better and they know better than the actual players do, comes across as superior and condescending. The bottom line is that in practice, Best Match has a number of flaws that takes away from the game experience and will ultimately cause a number of people to lose interest. We enjoyed the gameplay so much before that we did not want to see tinkering with a winning formula. I personally tried to get along with the new system but I have gone from an addicted player spending time every day to one that has not played once in the past three weeks now. Please accept my apology if my feedback came across as personal. That was not my intention. Regards, Mark Support, Jan 15 19:05 (EST): Hello Mark, I send all feedback to the SongPop Team, I have sent them the above forum. All feedback from customers is priceless in my opinion as a customer service member. That is why I make sure the team sees any feedback that I do. I do not have anything to do with what is implemented in the game or otherwise, I am only here to interact on a support basis. A "stock response" as you call it is a way that a company that interacts with thousands of users a days has to deliver messages that are of the same nature, otherwise the costs for support would be exponential. The SongPop Team provided me with the information to say, which was that they thought Best Match was a better feature that they were introducing. This was not my opinion, this was the SongPop Team expressing its excitement over a feature they were adding. Also, I'm a she, not that it matters. I love being a support member for the SongPop Community, but I would like for you to please remember that I am a messenger, not someone who has control over decisions with the company or gameplay. I am here to assist with technical and gameplay issues as best as I can. I'm sorry I do not have more information on these issues, I've submitted a report to the SongPop Team and hope to have some more answers for the SongPop Community soon. Thank you for playing SongPop! "Sorry for double posting, but this line bugged me a lot though:

Metrics showed that people were playing more with Best Matches than with random people.

Seriously? I mean, how the hell can you play more with Best Match than with random?? Am I missing something? What sort of metric system did they use to come up with this statement?"

Metrics is a system that measures how many people are playing each app on facebook (it may extend past facebook to IOS, etc). I know that it is measured by the month and day (MAU & DAU I believe). What I think I read once is that it just measures how many people open up the app, which means it would count me as playing the times that I just logged on and checked to see if I had a new chat from my friend. That is also why I have not wanted to type in a random user name or use best match..., it will be reflected in the statistics... so I don't want songpop to think if everyone is still playing then it must be fine.

Here is a website that tracks the statistics. http://www.appdata.com/apps/facebook/323595464361460-songpop - there is a link for facebook, one for IOS etc.

Thank you Kelly for the explanation. Maybe I misunderstood the statement with the wordings used (there's a difference between "people were playing more with..." and "more people were playing with...". I wish I could see the actual statistics of random vs. best match and the parameters used. If multiple log-in/app launch will count that many times towards app use, then that is misleading and unfair. For example, back when random was still available, I would only launch the app once and play for the whole day, because opponents were playing at the same time. With the best match implemented, I could only play for like 5 mins because I've already exhausted the best match list (btw, I delete opponents at the end of the tournament to play with a new set of opponents). This would require me multiple application launches because I'm checking whether my best matches have responded or not. Statistically, I've played more with best match, but did I really play more? Or is there a metric that measures game time instead of just game use?

Or let's say the stat only counts once even if I launched the app multiple times in a day and regardless of how long the app was open. That would still count me because I opened the game. Statistically, that means I still play (with best match implemented). Does that mean I like best match? Of course not. I was just checking if my best match opponents have responded.

Now, for the cases above, in order to show a decline, I have to completely stop playing by not launching the app at all. It will be hard for me though because I'm still checking (and hoping) for the return of random.

I did a bit of research and came across this statistic by Socialbakers (this is only for Facebook): http://www.socialbakers.com/facebook-applications/323595464361460-songpop

Sorry for the long post. I just can't accept that they base their "success" in metrics and actually ignore the sentiments of their players.

About Metrics: There is a book called "How to lie with statistics". And I would say "How the chairmen of the board (FB) can be misleaded"

The reliable statistic experiment goal should have been: How many people are using the random player feature regardless if their playing with their friends or not ?.  I could bet my head that over 90% played with a random player. At present time that measurement can't be done and should have been made before changing by the best match crap.

In my case, I'm chilean and my marketing expert wife told me about this game many months ago. I never had before a Facebook account. When she told me about it I create a Facebook account solely for playing Songpop. So I discovered some interesting features of Facebook that everybody knows. Then I think that made some profit to Facebook and a very fun game for me. At first the game was totally free and very interesting to me because I could play with any player in the world and select music lists of interest. As you can see I'm writing in English, despite being a chilean citizen should be writing in Spanish.I've been chating with players from U.S.A. for months, so I can practice my english with american people, all this thanks to the random player feature!.

Well, shortly, I state that FB is going in the oposite direction in a globally comunication sence, when they restrict players to play with people of the same country and now one of the more interesting feature of this game is lost.

I agree with wanting Random Match back.  When you cannot control when a player is going to respond, it was nice to be able to keep playing.  Now I can't play as long as I would like to, so I have to search for a new app.  Very disappointing.  I would think you would want more players playing longer.  It also makes me reconsidering my VIP membership.  If this is staying like this, I will not be renewing it.  why have 80 slots if you can't fill them?

This may have been the worst thing they could have changed. Not only is the game not fun anymore, but they are not even listening to their customers. I do not understand how they could just take a fun game and ruin it when it was running perfectly fine. Please, sign this petition as we need to get the message out and heard. http://www.change.org/petitions/songpop-bring-back-random-player-option-2

How nice that more people are playing. Too bad I won't be able to play them unless they live in California and play similar playlists to me. Major thumbs down.

Songpop lost a regular player with this change. The "best match" makes the game boring and I hate having to wait for people to play back instead of being able to start a new game immediately. I used to play for hours a day, now the developers will be lucky if I accidentally open the app by hitting the wrong icon on my screen once every few weeks. Bring back random play and I'll play songpop again. If it's not brought back I'll be deleting it from my phone.

Uhmm, how do you explain this part?

Best Matches provide more quality matches than with Random.

What makes a match a quality match? Same place, same playlists, fewer games, is that it?

I lost contact with someone Craig H I was playing found him by playing random, he went into the hopital and then I accidentally deleted him. He is trying to reach me I see random notes on my notification on my phone when I click on it he is NOT on my songpop and cannot get back to me. I think it is because he does not have enought of my info or because I deleted him. Now they changed to best match and no more random where he might show up. I tried to use he user name to find him but it says no match found. I feel like quitting the game. We used to play and chat he is termially ill and we hit it off. I feel so bad that he might think I deleted him.

Songpop Pro is a complete waste - with only three 'best matches' its impossible to use the extra game slots when these are not necessarily even wanting to play with new players.  Perhaps they are as bored as I am of finding themselves tied to a narrow range of play lists by the 'best match' feature.  If all I was interested in was matches and points there are a gazillion games out there - the unique  selling point of songpop was the wide range of music to enjoy along the way.

Without the fun and novelty of a steady stream of new players sending new musical variations through its just another 'also ran' game and I already find myself scarcely touching it post loss of random player.

With random play I used to get challenges all the time. Since the new format went in to effect 2 weeks ago (?) I have only received 2 challenges. Is anyone getting many "best match" challenges? I don't know if I'm not coming up in Best Match searches, or if it's just not a popular feature.

Songpop is my favourite game. Or, well, it used to be. You, the Songpop creators, were doing so well. Yet, since the Random Player feature has disappeared, I enjoy the game a lot less. The Daily Best Matches feature is highly flawed.

    - The best matches I receive are not best matches at all. I often get recommended people with a completely different taste in music than me (which is okay, but does not really make the name make sense) and the people I get recommended are all from my own country, which is NOT okay! I hate most music from my own country. (With a vengeance.)

    - One of the things that made Songpop into an ace game was that it was an international game. You got to meet people from all over. Now I'm being put in a tiny box with people from my own little part of the world. Couldn't you make an option for people who are xenophobic and only want to meet people with their own nationality? Then the rest of us could go on and have fun with each other.

    - The limitation to the number of players you can challenge, limits the times I can play the game, because so many people do not even respond to a challenge. This is exactly why I will not spend power-ups on this unbalanced feature.

    - Speaking of which: I don't receive any challenges anymore! What is that? Is that because people are playing the game less and less? Or is it that this new feature puts serious limitations on the amount of new matches being created? Is that on purpose? Are you running out of server capacity?

I'm really glad to read so many people have the same dislike for this change to the game as I do. Maybe you, the Songpop creators, will actually take our word for it: the Daily Best Matches takes the fun out of the game.

This game really sucks now that the random challenge option has been removed. I thought making updates was supposed to improve an app not ruin it. I have played 600 games less this week than I normally do so I don't see how the developers of this game figure that more people are playing with best match than random match-there is no way that can be true. I have played this game for about six months and on a daily basis and I have purchased VIP ever since it was implemented. Now having VIP is absolutely useless because you can't even reach the 80 game limit with this best match crap. With random match you could create as many challenges as you wanted and the people mostly accepted your challenge and were willing to play. In the 9 days since best match was introduced I've only received two new challenges total and only one of the players actually plays the game. Also, my best matches have been duplicates I've received one of the people at least three times and today my best matches didn't change at all, I have the same exact three people for another 24 hours. Quite frankly, I don't want to play people in my own geographic location. I currently play people from 11 different countries and I prefer to play players in other countries because it is more of a challenge. I would use power ups for random matches rather than best matches so please bring random matching back. If random matches are not brought back, I will stop playing this game as soon as I am no longer playing international opponents.

Nobody who purchased the product/VIP before the change went in to effect should consider settling to spend power ups in exchange to use what you were originally sold; a product with random play option unrestricted up to 80 games.  When you paid for this did it have the random game option and did you have to spend power ups to use it? No. This is falling in to their trap of bait and switch where you were sold one bill of good then they switch it up on you later.  Now people are willing to pay with power ups?  See what they're doing here?  At any rate I never got anywhere close to 80 games. I think it was something like 30.  The app is uninstalled from my phone and facebook. Letters written to state &  FTC.  One letter may not make a difference but many will. Your personal loss may seem too small to write a letter but when you consider the total profit from essentially stealing a few dollars from thousands of us it adds up.  This company should not be allowed to escape their bait & switch tactics without penalty.

Has anyone tried disabling location services on their devices to see if the Best Match feature gives you opponents outside of your geographic area?  I would love to try it, but I've already challenged my three "best" matches today and am not willing to use power ups to find out...

Also, it's not totally convenient, but earlier in the week when I was looking for people to play I searched the term songpop on twitter.  There were a decent number of people tweeting their user names.  It's an ok way to find players, although about half of the ones I tried had too many games.  Also, don't make the mistake (like I did) of using a power up to shuffle playlists and then find out they've got too many games. (Another lame thing songpop should fix!)

Based on my experience so far of 'Best Match':

    - 'Best Matches'  are largely identikit (no new music) and none from overseas (a good source of new music).

    - Since best matches started I've not had one single new challenge from a new player, nor have I had a response from a single 'best match' suggesting that only three chances per day of a new player is woefully inadequate

    - There is no point in resending me the same player as a 'best match' onsubsequent days when they have already declined to accept a challenge (this has happened several times)

    - The international nature of the game was a key part of the fun, picking up that overlap area of some in common, some new which made for my most enjoyable games

    - I am spending far less time playing the game and this is a direct consequence of limited to three new challenges per day - Songpop Pro is a complete waste of money now, its impossible to achieve 80 games using 'best match'

    - Spending powerups on getting new 'best matches' is a waste as to date none of those have responded either.  I won't waste more powerups and I'm certainly not wasting money on buying powerups on the offchance of getting another game - if I was looking for a gambling game I'd play poker.

In all it seems a crude way to constrain the game and coerce people to payout again to get use the capacity already paid for with no guaranteed game time - either Songpoop  is aiming to move into gambling games or has maxed out capacity and is forcing a cap.
